Merchandise export and import amounted to MOP911 million and MOP3.87 billion, down by 1.4% and 30.3% respectively year-on-year. Merchandise trade deficit totalled MOP2.96 billion.

In the first two months of 2020, merchandise export fell by 16.0% year-on-year, of which re-exports decreased by 17.8% but domestic exports increased by 3.7%; meanwhile, merchandise import declined by 14.1%. External merchandise trade dropped by 14.4% year-on-year to MOP14.38 billion.

Merchandise trade deficit totalled MOP10.26 billion, a decrease of MOP1.64 billion from MOP11.90 billion a year earlier.

Analysed by destination, merchandise export to mainland China (MOP224 million) and Hong Kong (MOP1.43 billion) dropped by 15.2% and 18.8%

respectively year-on-year in the first two months of 2020, while exports to the USA (MOP59 million) surged by 68.0%. By place of origin, merchandise import from mainland China (MOP4.05 billion), the EU (MOP3.71 billion) and Switzerland (MOP863 million) decreased by 17.2%, 8.9% and 27.1%

respectively year-on-year.
