No. 2 The resident population of Macao was estimated at 526 000 as at 30 June 2007, a year-on-year increase of about 27 000 persons.

In the second quarter of 2007, there were 993 live births, up by 0.1% and 6.7% over the previous quarter and the same quarter of 2006 respectively. The sex ratio of the newborns was 107.3, with 514 male babies.

The number of mortality cases reported was 378, a decrease of 10.0% over the preceding quarter, while remaining unchanged year on year. The major underlying causes of death included “Malignant neoplasms” (125 cases) and “Diseases of the circulatory system” (76 cases). Meanwhile, 4 cases of fetal mortality were recorded in this quarter.

The Health Bureau received 420 cases of Notifiable diseases, including 184 cases of “Varicella (chickenpox)”, 111 cases of “Tuberculosis of lung” and 44 cases of “Enterovirus infection”.

In addition, 530 marriages were registered, up by 4.7% and 7.5% over the first quarter of 2007 and the second quarter of 2006 respectively.

In the second quarter of 2007, a total of 1 347 persons were granted authorization to reside in Macao, while 87 persons had their right of abode cancelled, bringing the quarter-end balance to 39 068, up by 1 260 persons compared with the previous quarter.

The quarter-end balance of non-resident workers was 75 391, up by 4 209 and 25 144 persons over the preceding quarter and the second quarter of 2006 respectively.

Moreover, there were 491 legal immigrants from Mainland China, representing decreases of 6 persons (-1.2%) and 456 persons (-48.2%) compared with the previous quarter and the same quarter of 2006 respectively. Meanwhile, 424 illegal immigrants were repatriated, an increase of 15.8% over the previous quarter or up by 78.2% year on year.
