DEMOGRAPHIC STATISTICS

4th QUARTER / 2006

Resident population of Macao was estimated at 513 000 as at 31 December 2006, an increase of about 29 000 persons compared with the end of 2005.

In the fourth quarter of 2006, there were 1 157 cases of live births, up by 11.9% and 7.1%

respectively over the previous quarter and the same quarter of 2005. The sex ratio of the newborns was 101.9, with 584 male babies.

In the same quarter, 381 mortality cases were recorded, down by 0.5% and 2.8% over the previous quarter and the last quarter of 2005 respectively. The major underlying causes of death included “Malignant neoplasms” (116 cases) and “Diseases of the circulatory system” (93 cases).

Meanwhile, there were 6 cases of fetal death recorded in this period.

In addition, the Health Bureau received 1 660 cases of Notifiable diseases, which included 917 cases of “Varicella (chickenpox)”, 592 cases of “Enterovirus infection”, and 79 cases of

“Tuberculosis of lung”.

In this quarter, 691 cases of marriage were registered, which increased by 71.9% and 51.9%

compared with the previous quarter and the fourth quarter of 2005.

At the same time, the quarter-end balance of persons granted authorization to reside in Macao were 36 398

. Also, there were 64 673 non-resident workers in Macao, up 8 120 and 25 262 persons over the previous quarter and the same quarter of 2005 respectively.

In the fourth quarter of 2006, there were 239 legal immigrants from Mainland China, which decreased by 50.3% (-242 persons) and 70.2% (-563 persons) compared with the previous quarter and the same quarter of 2005 respectively. Meanwhile, 358 illegal immigrants were repatriated, up by 24.3% and 109.4% compared with the previous quarter and the fourth quarter of 2005 respectively.
