EAD 文件主體，用來描述檔案記錄主體之內容、背景及範圍，包含促進檔案使用的行政管理以及補充性的資訊。層次屬性（level attribute）是「檔案描述」元素必備屬性。必備元素。

逐頁資訊 / Runner / <runner>

提供標頭（header）、頁腳（footer）或浮水印，出現在紙本檢索工具的每一頁或遍及電子版本之選擇性格式元素。

描述識別 / Descriptive Identification /

<did>

提供基本初步的檔案資料描述，識別

『被描述資料』的核心資訊。在「描述識別」元素下的子元素被預設成簡潔、明確的資訊陳述，並不需要使用到「段落」元素來加入文字。必備元素。

標題 / Heading / <head> 標出標題或為一段文字加上標題之一般性元素。

單元題名 / Title of the Unit /

『被描述資料』之正式或被給定的名稱。「單元題名」元素在最高層次或「檔案描述」元素層次以及「成分」元素

單元識別 / ID of the Unit /

任何字母與數字符號構成的字串，用來作為『被描述資料』獨一無二的參照點（ reference point ）或控制號

兩者勿混淆，單元識別與檔案資料有關；EAD 識別則是檢索工具的識別號。
