Per-capita Spending of Visitors from Mainland China 632

Total spending of Mainland visitors increased by 17.6% year-on-year to MOP 11.33 billion (77.4% of total spending); spending of Guangdong visitors (MOP 4.03 billion) and Fujian visitors (MOP 294 million) rose by 15.0% and 8.0% respectively. Total spending of Mainland overnight visitors (MOP 9.14 billion) increased by 23.0% year-on-year, while that of same-day visitors (MOP 2.19 billion) edged down by 0.7%.

Per-capita spending of visitors from Singapore (+17.1%), Hong Kong (+19.7%) and Taiwan (+16.9%) recorded double-digit year-on-year growth.

Among the long-haul visitors, per-capita spending of visitors from Australia and the United Kingdom increased by 8.3% and 7.2% respectively year-on- year, while that from the United States decreased by 13.0%.

Per-capita spending of overnight visitors (MOP 2,809) increased by 11.5%

year-on-year, with that of Mainland visitors (MOP 3,270) rising by 10.9%.

Per-capita spending of same-day visitors (MOP 703) went up by 11.2%

year-on-year, with spending of those from Mainland China (MOP 842) increasing by 11.0%.

- Total spending (excluding gaming expenses) of visitors amounted to MOP 14.64 billion, up by 17.4% year-on-year and 25.1% quarter-to-quarter. Total spending of overnight visitors and same-day visitors increased by 21.5% and 2.1% respectively year-on-year.

- Per-capita spending of visitors was MOP 1,806, up by 17.3% year-on-year and 12.8% quarter-to-quarter; per-capita spending of overnight visitors and same- day visitors rose by 11.5% and 11.2% respectively year-on-year.

- Visitors spent mainly on shopping (43.4%), accommodation (27.3%) and food & beverage (21.3%).

- Visitors coming to Macao for MICE events had the highest per-capita spending, at MOP 3,089, up by 23.7% year-on-year, followed by those coming for shopping (MOP 2,504) and vacation (MOP 2,421), up by 14.7% and 9.1% respectively.

Per-capita spending of Mainland visitors rose by 18.2% year-on-year, with spending of Guangdong visitors rising by 16.2% and that of Fujian visitors leaping by 27.6%. Per-capita spending of Mainland visitors travelling under the Individual Visit Scheme (IVS) rose by 12.4% to MOP 2,312, with spending of those from Guangdong Province and Fujian Province rising by 12.2% and 3.7% respectively.

Analysed by countries and places, per-capita spending of overnight visitors from most countries and places registered year-on-year increase, except for a 12.7% decrease for that of the United States; meanwhile, remarkable growth in spending of those from Thailand, Mainland China, Singapore and Hong Kong was recorded. Among the long-haul visitors, per-capita spending of overnight visitors from the United Kingdom and Australia rose by 7.9% and 7.0% respectively year-on-year.

Per-capita shopping spending on jewellery & watches (MOP 116) and handbags & shoes (MOP 97) surged by 33.2% and 65.6% respectively year-on-year.

Per-capita spending of same-day visitors from Mainland China grew by 11.0% year-on-year, and spending of those from Hong Kong leapt by 27.8%. Among the long-haul visitors, per-capita spending of same-day visitors from the United Kingdom increased by 14.2% year-on-year, while that from the United States dropped by 15.4%.

Shopping spending accounted for 71.3% of the per-capita spending of same-day visitors, with local food products being the most popular item purchased; spending on food & beverage made up 16.3% of the total.

With regard to type of spending, per-capita shopping spending of overnight visitors increased by 14.7% year-on-year to MOP 1,039 (37.0% of total), while spending on accommodation (MOP 943) and food & beverage (MOP 630) rose by 14.6% and 6.4% respectively year-on-year.

Analysed by type of spending, visitors spent mainly on shopping (43.4% of total spending); per-capita shopping spending was MOP 783, up by 16.8%

year-on-year. Per-capita shopping spending of Mainland visitors was MOP 1,072, which accounted for 51.1% of their overall spending, while that of IVS visitors (MOP 1,395) made up 60.3% of the total.

Per-capita spending of visitors on accommodation (MOP 494) and food &

beverage (MOP 384) increased by 24.8% and 14.2% respectively year-on- year. Per-capita spending of Japanese visitors on accommodation (MOP 877) and that of Singaporean visitors on food & beverage (MOP 497) were relatively higher than those of visitors from other countries and places.

As regards type of shopping spending, visitors spent mostly on local food products (MOP 226) and cosmetics & perfume (MOP 134), up by 2.3% and 16.5% respectively year-on-year. Visitors from Singapore spent an average of MOP 351 on local food products, and Mainland visitors spent MOP 199 on cosmetics & perfume, both being higher than the corresponding spending of visitors from other countries and places.

Per-capita spending of visitors coming for shopping (MOP 2,504) and vacation (MOP 2,421) rose by 14.7% and 9.1% respectively year-on-year;

per-capita spending of those coming for business & professional purpose soared by 56.3% to MOP 1,667. The corresponding proportions of visitors together made up 63.5% of the total, up by 6.8 percentage points year-on- year.

The unemployed and economically inactive persons (such as housewives and retirees) constituted 32.7% of the total visitors, up by 2.9 percentage points year-on-year.

There were 67.4% of the visitors who complimented about services of public transport, down by 3.3 percentage points quarter-to-quarter, while 12.7% considered that these services should be improved, up by 3.4 percentage points.

According to the results of the Visitors ’ Comments Survey for the third quarter of 2016, 90.5% of the visitor-users were satisfied with the services and facilities of hotels, up marginally by 0.4 percentage points quarter-to- quarter; the proportions of visitors who expressed satisfaction with services of retail shops (85.0%) and gaming establishments (83.5%) rose by 2.5 and 1.7 percentage points respectively.

Meanwhile, 45.0% of the visitors commented that points of tourist attractions were adequate, an increase of 5.5 percentage points quarter-to- quarter.

Analysed by economic activity status of visitors, 21.0% of the visitors were legislators, senior officials and managers, up slightly by 0.2 percentage points year-on-year, followed by technicians and associate professionals, at 12.9%, down by 1.5 percentage points.

Structure (%)

Visitors coming mainly for transit accounted for 16.3% of the total, down by 3.5 percentage points year-on-year, and their per-capita spending was MOP 362, down by 12.7%.

Analysed by main purpose of visit, visitors coming for MICE events had the highest per-capita spending, at MOP 3,089, up by 23.7% year-on-year; the corresponding proportion of visitors constituted 0.7% of the total, up by 0.3 percentage points year-on-year.

The amount paid by visitors for the purchase of goods and services for own use or to give away, including expenses paid by the visitors or reimbursed by others such as relatives, friends or employers. Spending of visitors excludes gaming expenses, donations, expenses on purchase of assets and goods for resale.

Visitor who does not spend the night in any residential accommodation, hotel/guesthouse, or casino in the place visited, nor does he/she have accommodation arrangement with a hotel/guesthouse.

Visitor Expenditure Survey and Visitors' Comments Survey adopt systematic sampling in selecting samples who are visitors to Macao. At different departure points, enumerators collect spending data and comments on services and facilities from visitors during their stay in Macao.

Any person taking a trip to a main destination outside his/her usual environment, for less than a year, for any main purpose other than to be employed by a resident entity in the country or place visited.
