Japanese & Korean Restaurant

Owing to a slowdown in business after the Lunar New Year, coupled with the effect of the Lunar New Year occurring in February last year, only 37% of the interviewed restaurants & similar establishments reported a year-on-year growth in receipts in February 2017, down substantially by 25 percentage points from January. The proportion of establishments that recorded a year-on-year decline in receipts went up by 24 percentage points to 52%.

The interviewed restaurants & similar establishments were relatively optimistic about their business prospects in March, with 20% anticipating their receipts to increase year-on-year, up by 6 percentage points from February. The proportion of establishments that expected a year-on-year decline in receipts went up by 3 percentage points to 47%.

Retailers expected a slight improvement in their business in March. The proportion of interviewed retailers that anticipated a year-on-year increase in sales in March went up by 4 percentage points from February to 22%. Meanwhile, 40% of the retailers expected their sales to decline year-on-year, down by 4 percentage points.

The proportions of Chinese Restaurants (18%), Western Restaurants (25%) and Japanese & Korean Restaurants (31%) that reported a year-on-year rise in receipts dropped by 73, 40 and 19 percentage points respectively from January, while the proportion of Local Style Cafes, Congee & Noodle Shops rose by 8 percentage points. Meanwhile, the proportions of Chinese Restaurants (66%), Western Restaurants (55%) and Japanese & Korean Restaurants (56%) showing a decline in receipts went up by 61, 30 and 19 percentage points respectively (Table 1).

In January, 13% of the interviewed restaurants & similar establishments anticipated a year-on-year increase in receipts in February, and it turned out that 37% of them registered growth, higher than expected by 23 percentage points. The proportions of Local Style Cafes, Congee & Noodle Shops, Other Restaurants &

Similar Establishments, Chinese Restaurants and Japanese &

Korean Restaurants that showed a growth in receipts in February were higher than expected by 36, 35, 16 and 13 percentage points respectively. Meanwhile, 52% of the restaurants & similar establishments registered a decline in receipts in February, which was 8 percentage points higher than expected; the corresponding proportions of Other Restaurants & Similar Establishments (52%) and Japanese & Korean Restaurants (56%) were higher than the forecast by 24 and 13 percentage points (Table 2).

The interviewed restaurants & similar establishments were relatively optimistic about their business prospects in March, with 20%

anticipating their receipts to increase year-on-year, up by 6 percentage points from February. On the other hand, 47% of the restaurants & similar establishments expected a year-on-year decline in receipts, up by 3 percentage points from February (Table 3).

Among the various types of establishments, 21% of the Chinese Restaurants and 25% of the Japanese & Korean Restaurants expected their receipts to rise year-on-year in March, up by 18 and 6 percentage points respectively from February. On the other hand, the proportions of Local Style Cafes, Congee & Noodle Shops (50%) and Japanese & Korean Restaurants (56%) that anticipated a year-on-year decrease in receipts went up by 18 and 13 percentage points respectively from February.

As the Lunar New Year has passed and this Chinese festival that fell in February last year took place in late January this year, the proportion of interviewed retailers that reported a year-on-year growth in sales in February decreased by 23 percentage points from January to 31%. The proportions of Adults' Clothing Retailers (20%), Leather Goods Retailers (60%), Supermarkets (44%) and Department Stores (11%) that recorded a year-on-year rise in sales dropped by 45, 40, 33 and 33 percentage points respectively from January, while the corresponding proportion of Motor Vehicle Retailers (44%) went up by 11 percentage points (Table 4).

Actual Among the interviewed retailers, 53% reported a year-on-year

decrease in sales in February, up by 22 percentage points from January. The corresponding proportions of Adults' Clothing Retailers, Department Stores and Supermarkets increased by 55, 33 and 33 percentage points respectively, while the proportion of Motor Vehicle Retailers went down by 45 percentage points.

In January, 17% of the interviewed retailers anticipated a year-on- year growth in sales in February; however, it turned out that 31%

of them registered an increase, which was 14 percentage points higher than expected. The proportions of Motor Vehicle Retailers (44%), Supermarkets (44%) and Leather Goods Retailers (60%) that recorded a year-on-year sales rise were higher than expected by 44, 22 and 20 percentage points respectively (Table 5).

On the other hand, 53% of the interviewed retailers reported a year-on-year decrease in sales in February, higher than expected by 9 percentage points. The proportions of Adults' Clothing Retailers (75%) and Department Stores (67%) that recorded a decline in sales were higher than the forecast by 50 and 33 percentage points respectively, while the corresponding proportions of Motor Vehicle Retailers and Leather Goods Retailers were lower than expected by 45 and 40 percentage points respectively.

Owing to the above stated limitations, the Survey results only serve as a reference on the business trends of the surveyed industries. Hence, it is recommended to take into account other relevant data when evaluating the overall business performance of these industries.

The sample of the Business Climate Survey was selected by purposive sampling based on data collected from the annual Restaurants & Similar Establishments Survey and Retail Trade Survey. A total of 302 sampling units with relatively large contribution to the surveyed industries were selected, comprising 167 restaurants & similar establishments (accounting for 53% of the industry's receipts) and 135 retailers (accounting for 70% of the industry's receipts).

Results presented in this report were not extrapolated and only reflect the business performance and expectations of the sampling units. In order to achieve timeliness of the results, restaurants and retailers may not get hold of the actual sales figures at the time of data collection.

The Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) has conducted the monthly Business Climate Survey on Restaurants & Similar Establishments and Retail Trade since January 2016, which aims to provide a timely overview of the business performance of the surveyed industries in Macao.

Retailers expected a slight improvement in their business in March. The proportion of interviewed retailers that anticipated a year-on-year increase in sales in March went up by 4 percentage points from February to 22%. On the other hand, 40% of the retailers anticipated a year-on-year decline in sales, down by 4 percentage points from February (Table 6).

Among the various types of retailers, the proportion of Leather Goods Retailers that anticipated a year-on-year growth in sales went up to 80%; meanwhile, 22% of the Department Stores and 11% of the Motor Vehicle Retailers also expected their sales to rise. On the other hand, 60% of the Cosmetics & Sanitary Articles Retailers and 50% of the Adults' Clothing Retailers predicted a year-on-year decrease in sales; besides, 56% of the Motor Vehicle Retailers forecasted a sales decline of 20% or more, the same proportion as in the previous month.
