Overview and Analysis of Sigfrid

Abstract

The late-romantic German composer Sigfrid Karg-Elert (1877-1933) produced some of the most important repertoire of late-romanticism for the flute. His monumental solo work :Ƞ30 Caprices, op. 107, for flute soloȡis both in musical-style and technical challenges equivalent to Paganini’s 24 Caprices for violin. In spite of his relatively short life , Karg-Elert lived through a period of rapid development from romanticism to

20thcentury contemporary music. He grew up and studied in Leipzig, being a successor of the German romantic tradition with rich harmony and integrated impressionism which nourished him to create his very unique personal style.

There are 30 studies masterly written for flute in Karg-Elert’s Caprices of op. 107, composed within 1918-1919. Because of their diversely rich and varied content, very often these pieces are appointed for flute competitions. Especially the final study: No. 30, “Chaconne” is an excellent example of a combination of baroque variation dance and virtuosity of brilliant technique and this is the topic for the overview of this essay.

This essay is divided into five sections : Starting with Karg-Elert’s personal life and academic up-bringing, then displaying the relations of the musical traditions of Leipzig from baroque peroid to late-romanticism. Following this will be discussed the style and character of the baroque-era dance ‘ Chaconne’ and finally analyzing the fundamental harmony structure and technical variations of Karg-Elert’s composition.

Through this research, the author wants to bring forward a complete view of the work and wishing this knowledge can be of valuable help in assisting performance practice and proper interpretation.
