In December 2021, merchandise export amounted to MOP1.03 billion, down by 15.0% year-on-year; meanwhile, merchandise import rose by 22.2% to MOP14.68 billion. Merchandise trade deficit totalled MOP13.65 billion.

For the whole year of 2021, merchandise export rose by 19.9% year-on-year, with domestic exports and re-exports expanding by 28.1% and 18.5%

respectively; meanwhile, merchandise import showed an uplift of 66.2%. External merchandise trade grew by 61.4% year-on-year to MOP166.84 billion.

Merchandise trade deficit totalled MOP140.91 billion, an increase of MOP59.17 billion from MOP81.75 billion in 2020.

Analysed by destination, merchandise export to mainland China (MOP1.81 billion), Hong Kong (MOP9.16 billion) and the USA (MOP681 million) in 2021 went up by 12.3%, 22.7% and 22.8% respectively year-on-year. By place of origin, merchandise import from the EU (MOP49.80 billion), mainland China (MOP48.52 billion) and Japan (MOP13.16 billion) surged by 74.5%, 75.7% and 37.2% respectively year-on-year.

In the fourth quarter of 2021, merchandise export and import totalled MOP3.12 billion and MOP40.87 billion, up by 5.7% and 11.2% respectively year-on- year; this resulted in a trade deficit of MOP37.74 billion.
