In the fourth quarter of 2019, merchandise export and import totalled MOP3.40 billion and MOP26.22 billion, up by 8.7% and 7.4% respectively year-on-year, resulting in a trade deficit of MOP22.81 billion.

Merchandise export and import amounted to MOP1.10 billion and MOP8.95 billion, up by 5.1% and 12.1% respectively year-on-year. Merchandise trade deficit totalled MOP7.85 billion.

For the whole year of 2019, merchandise export rose by 5.0% year-on-year, of which re-exports increased by 5.8% but domestic exports decreased by 1.2%;

meanwhile, merchandise import held stable compared to 2018. External merchandise trade grew by 0.6% year-on-year to MOP102.93 billion. Merchandise trade deficit totalled MOP77.33 billion, a decrease of MOP577 million from MOP77.91 billion in 2018.

Analysed by destination, merchandise export to mainland China fell by 21.6% year-on-year to MOP1.58 billion for the whole year of 2019, while exports to Hong Kong (MOP8.16 billion) and the USA (MOP294 million) rose by 7.8% and 127.7% respectively. By place of origin, merchandise import from mainland China (MOP30.65 billion) and Switzerland (MOP6.85 billion) dropped by 2.8% and 1.6% respectively year-on-year, whereas imports from the EU (MOP24.92 billion) increased by 10.6%.
