EXTERNAL MERCHANDISE TRADE STATISTICS
AUGUST/2012 No. 8
Total merchandise export for August 2012 amounted to MOP816 million, up by 49.6% year-on-year,
attributable to a 83.5% surge in re-exports (MOP632 million), but
domestic exports (MOP184 million) decreased by 8.6%. Total merchandise import amounted to MOP6.05 billion, up by 7.1% year-on-year.Merchandise trade deficit amounted to MOP5.24 billion for August 2012.
From January to August 2012, total value of merchandise export increased by 19.4% year-on-year to MOP5.40 billion, of which value of re-exports and domestic exports increased by 29.7% and 0.1%
respectively. Total value of merchandise import grew by 19.6% to MOP46.50 billion over the same period of 2011.
Merchandise trade deficit for the first eight months of 2012 amounted to MOP41.10 billion. From January to August 2012, total value of external merchandise trade reached MOP51.90 billion, up by 19.6%
compared with MOP43.39 billion a year earlier.

In August 2012, exports of Textiles & garments declined by 22.0% year-on-year, of which value of Non-knitted or non-crocheted garments and Knitted or crocheted garments decreased by 30.8% and 28.5% respectively. Exports of Non-textiles increased by 68.4% year-on-year, of which value of Diamond and diamond jewellery surged by 10 times.
In the first eight months of 2012, exports of Textiles & garments fell by 22.7% year-on-year to MOP739 million; meanwhile, exports of Non-textiles grew by 30.7% to MOP4.66 billion, with that of Machines &
apparatus, parts & accessories thereof and Tobacco & wine soaring by 163.4% and 23.7% respectively.

Analysed by destination, merchandise export to Hong Kong (MOP2.74 billion) and Mainland China (MOP875 million) in the first eight months of 2012 increased by 41.9% and 18.5% year-on-year respectively, while export to the USA (MOP344 million) and the EU (MOP226 million) decreased by 12.5% and 17.0%
respectively.

In August 2012, total merchandise import amounted to MOP6.05 billion, up by 7.1% year-on-year, with that of Raw materials and semi-manufactures rising by 23.2%.
In the first eight months of 2012, total value of merchandise import grew by 19.6% year-on-year to MOP46.50 billion, with that of Consumer goods (MOP28.40 billion) and Capital goods (MOP8.53 billion) rising by 21.0% and 20.6% respectively.

Analysed by imports of Consumer goods, in the first eight months of 2012, value of Food &
beverages (MOP5.55 billion) grew by 0.2% year-on-year; Other durable consumer goods (MOP10.71 billion) expanded by 38.6%, with Watches (MOP3.47 billion) rising by 46.7%; Other semi-durable consumer goods (MOP6.18 billion) increased by 17.9%, with Handbags & wallets (MOP2.50 billion) rising by 23.1%.

Within the imports of Capital goods, in the first eight months of 2012, value of Mobile phones (MOP3.83 billion) and Computer hard disks (MOP616 million) increased by 48.0% and 43.9% respectively year-on-year.

In the first eight months of 2012, merchandise import from Mainland China (MOP14.99 billion), the EU (MOP10.89 billion) and Hong Kong (MOP5.42 billion) rose by 25.1%, 12.4% and 23.3% respectively year-on-year.
