EXTERNAL MERCHANDISE TRADE STATISTICS

FEBRUARY/2012 No. 2

Total merchandise export for February 2012 amounted to MOP653 million, up notably by 82.4% year- on-year compared with the Lunar New Year holidays in February 2011; value of re-exports (MOP481 million) and domestic exports (MOP172 million) surged by 97.3% and 50.5% respectively. Total merchandise import amounted to MOP5.71 billion, up by 64.4% year-on-year. Merchandise trade deficit amounted to MOP5.06 billion in February 2012.

From January to February 2012, total value of merchandise export increased by 25.9% year-on-year to MOP1.27 billion, of which value of re-exports and domestic exports rose by 38.7% and 3.1% respectively. Total value of merchandise import grew by 35.9% to MOP11.35 billion over the same period of 2011.

Merchandise trade deficit for the first two months of 2012 widened by 37.2% year-on-year to MOP10.08 billion. From January to February 2012, total value of external merchandise trade amounted to MOP12.62 billion, up by 34.8% compared with MOP9.36 billion a year earlier.

In February 2012, exports of Textile & garment expanded by 40.8% year-on-year, of which value of Knitted or crocheted garment and Non-knitted or non-crocheted garment increased by 50.7% and 69.2%

respectively. Exports of Non-textile increased by 89.7% year-on-year, of which value of Diamond & diamond jewellery surged by 629.6%.

In the first two months of 2012, exports of Textile & garment fell by 13.2% to MOP180 million;

meanwhile, exports of Non-textile grew by 36.1% year-on-year to MOP1.09 billion, with that of Articles for casino and Machines & apparatus, parts & accessories thereof soaring by 266.9% and 212.4% respectively, but exports of Clocks & watches dropping by 15.2%.

Analysed by destination, merchandise export to Hong Kong (MOP661 million) and Mainland China (MOP162 million) in the first two months of 2012 increased by 42.1% and 26.0% respectively year-on-year, but that to the USA (MOP81 million) and the EU (MOP56 million) decreased by 12.6% and 16.7% respectively.

In February 2012, total merchandise import amounted to MOP5.71 billion, up by 64.4% year-on-year, with that of Consumer goods rising by 68.2%.

In the first two months of 2012, total value of merchandise import grew by 35.9% year-on-year to MOP11.35 billion, with that of Consumer goods (MOP6.96 billion) and Capital goods (MOP2.12 billion) rising by 35.6% and 43.2% respectively year-on-year.

Analysed by imports of Consumer goods, in the first two months of 2012, value of Food & beverages (MOP1.49 billion) grew by 13.7% year-on-year; Other durable consumer goods (MOP2.51 billion) expanded by 61.7%, with Watches (MOP797 million) rising by 58.4%; Other semi-durable consumer goods (MOP1.64 billion) increased by 32.1%, with Handbags & wallets (MOP697 million) rising by 57.8%.

Within the imports of Capital goods, in the first two months of 2012, value of Mobile phones (MOP996 million) and Portable computers (MOP156 million) increased by 64.5% and 24.4% respectively year-on-year.

In the first two months of 2012, merchandise import from Mainland China (MOP3.47 billion), the EU (MOP2.76 billion) and Hong Kong (MOP1.39 billion) rose by 43.9%, 25.4% and 60.6% respectively year-on- year.
