EXTERNAL MERCHANDISE TRADE STATISTICS

APRIL/2010 No. 4

The value of total merchandise import for April 2010 amounted to MOP3.53 billion, up by 19.3% year- on-year. The value of total merchandise export rose slightly by 0.1% year-on-year to MOP694 million, with value of re-exports rising by 12.6% to MOP506 million, but that of domestic exports falling by 22.9% to MOP188 million. A trade deficit of MOP2.83 billion was recorded for April 2010.

From January to April 2010, total value of merchandise export fell by 7.0% year-on-year to MOP2.52 billion, with the value of domestic exports declining by 36.3%, but that of re-exports growing by 15.5%;

meanwhile, total value of merchandise import rose by 19.3% to MOP13.40 billion over the same period of 2009.

The trade deficit for the first four months of 2010 widened by 27.7% year-on-year to MOP10.88 billion;

the exports/imports ratio which reflects import and export trade balance situation was 18.8%, down by 5.3 percentage points year-on-year. From January to April 2010, total value of merchandise import and export amounted to MOP15.92 billion, up by 14.2% compared with MOP13.94 billion in the first four months of 2009.

Exports of Textile & garment amounted to MOP514 million, down substantially by 51.7% year-on- year to account for 20.4% of the total merchandise export in the first four months of 2010; however, value of Non-textile exports (MOP2.01 billion) increased by 21.9%, with that of Copper & articles thereof and Jewellery rising notably by 139.4% and 119.1% respectively, but value of Machines & apparatus, parts &

accessories thereof dropping by 40.7%.

Analyzed by destination of merchandise exports, value of merchandise export to Hong Kong (MOP1.19 billion) and Mainland China (MOP387 million) in the first four months of 2010 grew by 24.7%

and 0.3% respectively year-on-year, whereas that to the USA (MOP266 million) and the EU (MOP128 million) dropped by 56.5% and 47.8% respectively.

In the first four months of 2010, total value of merchandise import increased by 19.3% year-on-year. In terms of Broad Economic Categories, value of imports of Consumer goods (MOP8.11 billion) and Fuels &

lubricants (MOP1.61 billion) rose by 40.8% and 25.1% respectively year-on-year, but that of imports of Capital goods (MOP1.90 billion) and Raw materials & semi-manufactures (MOP1.77 billion) declined by 18.9% and 3.4% respectively.

Among the imports of Consumer goods, value of Motor cars & motorcycles (MOP583 million) rose significantly by 115.2% year-on-year, and that of Other durable consumer goods (e.g. jewellery and watches), semi-durable consumer goods (e.g. clothing and footwear) and non-durable consumer goods (e.g.

tobacco and skin-care products) grew by 69.2%, 25.3% and 17.6% respectively.

Within the imports of Raw materials & semi-manufactures, the value of textile materials (12.1% of total) fell by 37.5% year-on-year and that of construction materials (9.0%) slid by 37.0%; nevertheless, the value of semi-manufactures of machinery & electrical machines (9.7%) registered an increase of 40.5%.

In the first four months of 2010, value of merchandise import from Mainland China (MOP4.12 billion) and Hong Kong (MOP1.41 billion) rose by 21.7% and 14.6% respectively year-on-year, and that from the EU (MOP2.92 billion) and Japan (MOP1.19 billion) grew by 20.7% and 36.0% respectively.
