1.建立更精確且清晰的西方音樂史觀。
2.建立西方音樂史研究「貫時性」（Diachronic）與「共時性」（Synchronic）的認知。
3.瞭解西方音樂古典時期的風格特色與發展。
4.帶領學生認識西方音樂作品與風格，建立理解、分析之能力。
5.從歷史遞嬗的角度，理解西方音樂與當代人類文明之間的互動與影響。

學習規範
1.採seminar方式進行，教師事先提示課程相關重點與詳細內容，並視情況輔以音樂相關文獻、圖像、樂譜、模擬演 出實況等史料輔助教學。
2.負責課程簡報之研究生應提供樂曲實例聆賞，俾使全體課程參與者能從音樂實例確實理解各種樂曲之作曲技術，以及 獲得之實際聲響效果與目的，並進一步建立起音樂風格、樂曲形式結構之形成等相關知識。
3.由任課教師依實際情況指定報告作業，並於課堂進行討論。
4.由教師提示下週授課重點，學生依據課程指定範圍事先預習。
5.請假若遇上報告，最起碼需事前一週告知授課教師，以利安排替換人選，否則以曠課論。
