As regards retail trade, 40% of the interviewed retailers registered a year-on-year sales increase in October, signifying an increase of 4 percentage points from September. On the other hand, 33% of the interviewed retailers reported a year-on-year sales decrease, down slightly by 1 percentage point from September.

The interviewed restaurants & similar establishments were cautious about their business prospects in November, with 33% of the interviewed establishments anticipating a year-on-year decline in receipts, up by 2 percentage points from October. Meanwhile, the proportion of interviewed establishments expecting their receipts to remain steady year-on-year decreased by 2 percentage points from October to 49%.

Retailers were more conservative about their business performance in November, with 49% of the interviewed retailers predicting stable sales year-on-year, up by 4 percentage points from October. On the other hand, 27% of the interviewed retailers expected a year-on-year sales decrease, an increase of 2 percentage points from October.

Among the interviewed restaurants & similar establishments, 33%

registered a year-on-year rise in receipts in October, higher than expected by 16 percentage points. The corresponding proportions of Local Style Cafes, Congee & Noodle Shops, Western Restaurants and Japanese &

Korean Restaurants exceeded the forecast by 24, 20 and 18 percentage points respectively. On the other hand, 39% of the interviewed establishments recorded a year-on-year decrease in receipts in October, higher than predicted by 9 percentage points. The corresponding proportions of Western Restaurants and Chinese Restaurants outpaced the forecast by 15 and 13 percentage points respectively (Table 2).

The proportion of Chinese Restaurants (33%) recording a year-on-year rise in receipts in October rose by 10 percentage points from September, while that of Western Restaurants (45%) decreased by 5 percentage points. On the other hand, the proportion of Local Style Cafes, Congee & Noodle Shops (28%) reporting a year-on-year decline in receipts reduced by 15 percentage points and that of Western Restaurants (45%) grew by 15 percentage points (Table 1).

Among the interviewed retailers, 40% registered a year-on-year sales

increase in October, higher than expected by 10 percentage points. The corresponding proportion of Watches, Clocks & Jewellery Retailers exceeded the forecast by 11 percentage points, while that of Leather Goods Retailers was lower than predicted by 20 percentage points. On the other hand, 33% of the interviewed retailers reported a year-on-year sales decrease in October, higher than expected by 8 percentage points.

The corresponding proportion of Motor Vehicle Retailers (80%) outstripped the forecast by 40 percentage points (Table 5).

There were 35% of the interviewed Adults’ Clothing Retailers reporting a year-on-year rise in sales in October, a growth of 5 percentage points over September, whereas 44% of the interviewed Supermarkets saw steady sales, up by 22 percentage points. Meanwhile, the proportions of Motor Vehicle Retailers (80%) and Department Stores (36%) registering a year-on-year sales decrease rose by 20 and 18 percentage points respectively from September (Table 4).

On the other hand, the proportion of Japanese & Korean Restaurants (59%) expecting a year-on-year decline in receipts in November increased by 21 percentage points from October (Table 3).

About 30% of the Chinese Restaurants expected a year-on-year rise in receipts in November, up by 7 percentage points from October, while 52% of them anticipated their receipts to remain stable, down by 2 percentage points. As regards Western restaurants, 50% of them predicted their receipts to hold steady year-on-year, an increase of 5 percentage points from October.

The sample of the Business Climate Survey on Restaurants & Similar Establishments and Retail Trade was selected based on the value of receipts of the establishments, comprising 174 restaurants & similar establishments (accounting for 53% of the industry’s receipts) and 136 retailers (accounting for 70% of the industry’s receipts). The Survey results were not extrapolated and only reflect the assessment of the business performance and expectations of the sample restaurants and retailers.
