VISITOR ARRIVALS

In February 2002, the number of visitor arrivals in Macao was 934,877, equivalent to an increase of 31.6% over February 2001. The increase became evident since the 2002 Chinese New Year holidays fall in February as against January in 2001. Visitors came mainly from Hong Kong (51.6%), Mainland China (32.0%), Taiwan (11.3%), Southeast Asia (1.3%) and Japan (1.1%). Same-day visitors reached 378,590 (40.5% of the total arrivals), an increase of 19.6%.

From January to February 2002, the cumulative number of visitor arrivals reached 1,712,982, up 7.3% over the same period of 2001. Furthermore, same-day visitors reached 706,906 (+4.1%), which shared 41.3% of the total visitor arrivals.

Compared with the first two months of 2001, the cumulative number of arrivals by sea went up 4.3%, with 898,246.

Among these visitors, 877,105 arrived at the Outer Harbour, a growth of 4.7%. Arrivals by land totalled at 688,212, an increase of 11.9%; 652,047 arrived through the Border Gate and 36,165 visitors arrived through the Checkpoint of CoTai. Arrivals by air were 126,524 (+5.3%); with 124,458 arrivals (+6.1%) at the Macao International Airport.
