Retail trade business in November was satisfactory, with 53% of the interviewed retailers registering a year-on-year sales increase, a growth of 13 percentage points from October. On the other hand, the proportion of interviewed retailers reporting a year-on-year decrease in sales reduced by 9 percentage points from the preceding month to 31%.

In November, the proportions of Chinese Restaurants (59%) and Local Style Cafes, Congee & Noodle Shops (41%) showing a year-on-year decline in receipts rose by 10 percentage points and 9 percentage points respectively from October. Meanwhile, 42% of the Western Restaurants recorded a year-on-year growth in receipts, an increase of 21 percentage points from the preceding month (Table 1).

There were 30% of the interviewed restaurants & similar establishments registering a year-on-year rise in receipts in November, higher than expected by 20 percentage points. The corresponding proportions of Western Restaurants (42%) and Local Style Cafes, Congee & Noodle Shops (37%) exceeded the forecast by 37 percentage points and 31 percentage points respectively. On the other hand, 47% of the interviewed establishments recorded a year-on-year decrease in receipts, slightly higher than the forecast by 1 percentage point (Table 2).

12.9 The business performance of restaurants & similar establishments remained subdued in November. There were 47% of the interviewed restaurants & similar establishments recording a year-on-year decline in receipts in November, an increase of 4 percentage points from October. Meanwhile, 30% of the interviewed establishments reported a year-on-year rise in receipts in November, representing a 2 percentage point decrease from October.

The interviewed restaurants & similar establishments anticipated no significant improvement in business in December, with 52% of them expecting their receipts to increase year-on-year or remain steady, a decrease of 2 percentage points from November. On the other hand, the proportion of interviewed establishments foreseeing a year-on-year decrease in receipts in December grew by 2 percentage points to 48%.

Retailers envisaged a slowdown in business in December, with the proportion of interviewed retailers expecting their sales to increase year-on-year or remain steady dropping by 3 percentage points from November to 68%. Meanwhile, 32% of the interviewed retailers anticipated a year-on-year sales decrease in December, up by 3 percentage points from November.

Restaurants' expectations for receipts for December 2019

The proportion of Japanese & Korean Restaurants (39%) that envisaged a year-on-year growth in receipts or stable performance in December reduced by 17 percentage points from November, whereas the corresponding share of Chinese Restaurants (61%) rose by 11 percentage points. (Table 3).

Among the interviewed retailers, 53% recorded a year-on-year sales rise in November, higher than expected by 24 percentage points. The corresponding shares of Motor Vehicle Retailers (78%) and Watches, Clocks & Jewellery Retailers (72%) surpassed the forecast by 45 percentage points and 33 percentage points respectively, while the proportions of Leather Goods Retailers (100%) and Cosmetics & Sanitary Articles Retailers (50%) both exceeded expectations by 40 percentage points. On the other hand, 31% of the interviewed retailers registered a year-on-year sales drop in November, higher than anticipated by 2 percentage points. The corresponding proportion of Adults' Clothing Retailers (60%) outstripped the forecast by 25 percentage points (Table 5).

There were 73% of the interviewed Department Stores, 50% of the Cosmetics & Sanitary Articles Retailers and 78% of the Motor Vehicle Retailers showing a year-on-year sales increase in November, up notably by 45 percentage points, 30 percentage points and 22 percentage points respectively from October. On the other hand, none of the interviewed Supermarkets and Leather Goods Retailers reported a year-on-year sales decline, the same situation as in October (Table 4).

The sample of the Business Climate Survey on Restaurants & Similar Establishments and Retail Trade was selected based on the value of receipts of the establishments, comprising 186 restaurants & similar establishments (accounting for 53% of the industry’s receipts) and 136 retailers (accounting for 70% of the industry’s receipts). The Survey results were not extrapolated and only reflect the assessment of the business performance and expectations of the sample restaurants and retailers.
