the applieb voltage stays the same no matter how much Current flows, so avalanche diodes are widely used as

voltag 巴 regulators.

Dr. Shockley found that by adding anoth巴 r section to the diode, he could control the amount of current flowing through the device under avalanche conditions. This means that it could be used as an amplifier like an ordinary transistor.

The advantag巴 of the new device is that in high power

operation

,

where much heat is generated

,

it won't develop hot spots as ordinary transistors do. This is because higher temperatures increase the voltage at which avalanche oecurs

,

so tha t if it gets too ho t, th巴 avalanche transistor automat-' icalIy shuts down before it damages itself.

Dr. Shockley says he likes the device because

it seems to be a transistor that operates as high as 10 megacycles." He assigned the patent to International Telephone and Telegraph Corp , which is now working to p巴rfectthe device. Patent 3,339,086.

of known velocity were sent through a stack of thin metal foils enclosed in a vacuum. As they passed from metal into

th巴 vacuum, the 臼 transition" radiation was measured. The

intensity of the radiation in the forward direction was found to increase in a rehular way as the velocity of the particles we立 t up.

If the transition radiation detector can be developed, it will be useful to det巴rmine the unknown velocity of particles by the amount of radiation they give off. This in turn could be used to identify unknown particles.

Although other techniques can b巴 used to measure vel-oeity of slower moving particles

,

the known methods don't work when speeds approach the speed of light in a vacuum. The research is reported in the Aug 28 PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS
