VISITOR ARRIVALS

The total number of visitor arrivals reached 1,355,262 in April 2004, another all-time record of visitor arrivals in a single month, given that Ching Ming and Easter Holidays both came in April this year, coupled with the effect of the Individual Visit Scheme in Mainland China. The 105.1% year-on- year growth was caused by the sharp decrease in visitor arrivals last April when Macao was affected by the SARS epidemic in the neighbouring areas. In April 2004, visitors to Macao mainly came from Mainland China (including those who travelled under the Individual Visit scheme), Hong Kong and Taiwan. Same-day visitors, at 675,623, accounted for 49.9% of the total arrivals.

In the first four months of 2004, there were 5,106,709 visitor arrivals, up 39.7% over the same period of last year. Same-day visitors at 2,538,638, made up 49.7% of the total arrivals.

Compared with the same period of last year, in the first four months of 2004, visitor arrivals by sea were 1,993,478 (+20.4%), while 1,949,480 (+20.8%) arrived at the Outer Harbour. Arrivals by land soared to 2,870,834 (+61.2%), with 2,695,903 (+58.4%) arrived through the Border Gate and 174,931 through the Checkpoint of CoTai.

Arrivals by air were 242,397 (+10.2%), among which 237,609 (+9.8%) arrived at the Macao International Airport.
