– There were 100 hotels and guesthouses operating in 2013, comprising 67 hotels and 33 guesthouses. Persons engaged totalled 39,909, with 80% of them working in five-star hotels.

206 – Receipts of the hotel industry rose by 15% year-on-year, at MOP 25.30 billion. Receipts from Abroad went up by 32% to

MOP 4.60 billion.

– Gross Value Added that measures the sectoral contribution to the economy increased by 17% year-on-year to MOP 12.15 billion. Gross Fixed Capital Formation tumbled by 73% to MOP 2.26 billion.

year-on-year.

Non-operating Expenses increased by 10% year-on-year to MOP 7.85 billion, of which Depreciation (MOP 6.60 billion) rose by 22% while Interest Paid (MOP 1.25 billion) dropped by 29%.

As regards Purchase of Goods & Commission Paid, 76%

came from Food & Beverages (+18%); expenses on Other Goods (MOP 601 million) dropped by 9% year-on- year. Purchase of Goods & Commission Paid Abroad totalled MOP 277 million.

Expenditure of five-star and four-star hotels accounted for 89% and 67% of their respective Receipts in 2013, down by 4 and 11 percentage points from 93% and 78%

in 2012, indicating that these two types of hotels were performing better compared with 2012.

Without the opening of new hotels, Gross Fixed Capital Formation of the industry declined by 73% year-on-year despite a 1,008% upsurge for guesthouses.

Meanwhile, expenses on Professional & Consulting Services (including legal and accounting services, etc.) of four-star hotels totalled MOP 148 million, sharing 18% of their Operating Expenses.

·

Operating Expenses of hotels were mainly incurred on Other Contractual Services and Electricity. Expenses on Other Contractual Services (such as coach hire with driver and management services, etc.) of five-star hotels amounted to MOP 1.74 billion.

30 51 For three-star and two-star hotels, Receipts from Room Sales amounted to MOP 844 million; meanwhile, Other Receipts (including receipts from management and sales of cigarette and alcohol) totalled MOP 670 million, sharing 34% of the total.

Analysed by classification of establishments, the 28 five- star hotels dominated in the industry's Receipts and Expenditure, at 83% and 86% of the respective total.

Receipts from Abroad (MOP 4.18 billion) and Receipts from Online Business (MOP 430 million) of five-star hotels made up 91% and 76% of the respective total for hotels.

Gross Value Added of four-star hotels totalled MOP 1.42 billion, up notably by 31% year-on-year. On the contrary, Gross Value Added of two-star hotels decreased by 7%

to MOP 67 million, due to the increase in Operating Expenses and Purchase of Goods & Commission Paid.

Glossary

Gross Fixed Capital Formation

Gross fixed capital formation: Equals the value of total acquisitions of new, used and self-produced fixed assets, less the proceeds from sales of fixed assets. Fixed assets include buildings; furniture; machinery and equipment; vehicles; and other durable goods with a usable span of one year or more. Also included are major repairs, alterations and extensions made to the existing assets.

Gross value added: Equals receipts, plus changes in inventories, minus purchases of goods for sale, commission paid and operating expenses.

Non-operating expenses: Include depreciation and interest paid.

Persons engaged: All individuals who work for the establishment, including employees and unpaid workers, but excluding individuals who are absent for an indefinite period.

Operating expenses: Include materials for self consumption; water; fuels; electricity; maintenance and repairs; rent of establishment; marketing, market research and publicity; trademark usage; complimentary goods and services; professional

& consulting services; other contractual services (including coach hire with driver, management, cleaning, pest control and laundry services, etc.); and other operating expenses.

Receipts: Receipts from the provision of services and resale of goods and products before any deduction of costs. Receipts come from room sales; food & beverages; rental of space; and other receipts not specified above, but exclude interest received and insurance claims.

Coverage of the survey comprises all licensed hotels and guesthouses in the reference year. The list of establishments is originated from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) and supplemented with information from the Financial Services Bureau and the Macao Government Tourist Office.
