結論與展望

由費約翰所呈現出來的「澳洲」與「中國」的想像，「中國」似乎是一種重 視精神、傳承、認同的中國，而無法僅以西方主權國家所注重的權力、資源、疆 域來理解。同理，「澳洲」也一樣是個注重平等、自由與博愛的澳洲，而沒有真 正的「白澳民族」存在。中國與澳洲的國家形成相當類似，前者透過理想的共同 體想像；後者透過理想澳大利亞聯邦的想像。中國與澳大利亞建國後，國界更是 由於華人的來往穿梭而消弭。華人游移在中澳之間，揭露了澳大利亞焦慮的身分 認同，同時也開啟中國的民族意識，而跨地域的事實也將中國與澳洲共同推向世 界，使自身能與世界結合。費約翰將中國與華人當作澳洲自身歷史在研究，也就 不同於美國學術界，將「中國」視為是外於自己的對象。

本篇最後提出反思，在未來整理澳洲中國學的研究時，如何可以根據費約翰 的作品旨趣，發展出三個方面同時進行的研究議程，一方面是分析澳洲學界如何 想像中國；二方面根據澳洲對於中國的想像，探究澳洲進入亞洲的合理化藉口；

第三，根據澳洲中國學界的反思，聯繫澳洲自身的認同建構與澳洲學界對中國的 認識。費約翰從中國知識界追求西方價值的過程中，似乎看到中國知識界在西方 價值的追求中與西方知識界有著不同的動機，這個動機的解讀可以提供費約翰想 像「中國」的基礎，並在中國發現類似「國協」精神的知識視野，成為足與歐美 學者相互比較的南方觀點。

本論文的中心，在於挖掘費約翰在針對海外華人以及中國知識份子兩種政治 運動型態進行詮釋的時候，預設了一種以「模仿」為中心的主體形成過程，暗示 了在不同地理空間之中的華人、中國人、澳洲人都是利用模仿來建構自身的政治 主體，並且在此過程之中，因為不同的行為者針對理想主體的不同構想，使得建 構主體的過程本身就是一種政治過程。然而，在政治過程中卻產生無法事先決定 政治結果以及抗拒形式，因而使得當代的中國成為可能。馬克思主義或是自由平 等的政治理論，也就無法完整解釋中國人以及華人的政治行為以及結果。換句話 說，本文旨在點出費約翰對中國的理解，奠基在一種主體政治過程中的多元論之 上。而這種多元論，一方面是不列顛史學中的論述終點，二方面又是南洋人類學 史的理論起點，費約翰既然以此多元論作為核心，也就同時受到了這兩種典範的 影響，至於在多大的程度上可以說明澳洲中國研究的位置，是否真確的處在南洋 移民研究以及不列顛史學之間，就有待爾後的研究。
