第五章 比較與結論
第二節 薄紗下的多元──澳洲的漢學研究
澳洲的漢學研究社群，由於歷史發展經驗、政策提倡、經濟利益、社群構成 等因素，形成了較有利外地學者加入的環境。當外聘學者成為常態，來自各地的 學者構成當地學術社群中的主體，該社群自然具備了多元性，於是外來學者也就
不稱其為「外來」。由於原先來自外地的學者加入當地學術社群一段時間並生根 後，本就很難再稱說是具有「外來」性，反而是豐富了該社群的組成，這時所謂
「外來」就已然是一種內生的性質。與美國相比，澳洲的漢學研究由於發展之初 受到幾位重要外國學者的影響，長期有著重視在地的特色，也就是費約翰所說的 以中國中心來研究的傳統。
雖然就澳洲政府來說，對中國研究的鼓勵主要仍來自於本國經濟利益，但由 於在經濟上對亞洲的依賴以及其國力沒有將中國視為對手的必要，使得官方對中 國的態度相對美國較為友善。另外學界的鬆散構成關係，以及漢學發展之初仰賴 外國學者的影響，使得學者能擁有較大的自主性。在這數個條件的配合下，澳洲 漢學界成為提供資源環境且讓學者能較不受干擾的從事研究之處。
整體觀之，澳洲的漢學研究因為給予學者較大的自主空間以及有著眾多來自 各地的研究者，確實展現出較多元的樣貌。而這些來自外地加入的學者也為澳洲 漢學作出重要成果貢獻，除了第四章歷史研究所論及的幾位重要學者外，提倡地 方研究的古德曼是猶太人，杭智科則是德國人，還有如本文所討論的美國人安戈 及華人何包鋼、華人陳佩華等，都對澳洲的中國研究的成果有著重大貢獻。至於 澳洲本地生長背景的重要學者如費約翰、白杰明等，更都競相表現出對中國在地 觀點的靈敏與開放性。澳洲的漢學研究社群既有著眾多來自各地的學者，而本地 的學者亦習慣於此情況，由此觀之澳洲漢學界似乎以國際學群的方式呈現。
多元性除展現在研究者的身份構成上，也展現在研究對象與研究方法上。比 如，不從學科或宏觀理論出發，擺脫了條條框框與意識型態，容許研究對象各自 展現主體性，而不論這個研究對象是農民、村、鄉或少數民族等等。安戈與何包 鋼在研究方法上重視在地觀點，就預設了多元性與基層主體性。
然而澳洲漢學界仍非以多元性為其唯一的構成，而是繼續籠罩在一層西方屬 性的薄紗之下。首先，即使在澳大利亞中國研究領域充滿中國中心意識，學界也 僅承認英語發表的研究，至於何包鋼滿盈的中文研究，則是出自對中國政治產生 影響的願望而作。澳洲學界積極與西方學界對話辯論的情況，說明英美學界仍最 被重視，故對澳洲有著最強的影響。另外，即使澳洲學界有較高的自主性，但仍 多少承載著澳洲國家社會整體的定位。澳洲雖以多元文化為政策基調及理想，但 英美傳統仍居於主流強勢。澳大利亞各界目前對自己的期許，是成為東方和西方 之間的橋梁，以及西方國家在亞洲的代表，因此仍然屬於西方世界的一員。在澳 洲的社會互動中，能良好的使用英語溝通仍是在當地生活獲得尊重的初步條件。
種族歧視的情況雖日漸改善，但在澳洲仍時有所聞。多元文化風氣在澳大利亞的 貫徹，仍是一項未竟之業。澳大利亞漢學界由於其專業性以及發展經驗，能較一 般社會呈現更加多元平等的風氣，但英語學術圈仍是澳大利亞漢學界參與發表最 積極的地方。允為薄紗下的多元。
