ABSTRACT. In 1993, Taiwan's Ministry of Education set new standards for

mathematics curriculum in elementary schools. This article examines the acceptance, resistance, and criticism of the experimental curriculum developed to meet those standards to reveal their socio-cultural meanings. The major controversies were over the delay in introduction of algorithms and the change of teaching method. These controversies reflect problems with miscommunication and deficiency in teaching skills as well as the influence of culturally rooted adult-child relations on mathematics education.

研討會參與：

研討會的進行區分為兩大部份：大會演講與討論、小組發表與討論。 一、 大會演講（plenary lecture）與討論 提出各種數學教育－文化比較的研究觀點，提供目前文化比較研究的成果，在方 法論層面，探討如何進行研究，才能對數學教育有實質的建議。 二、 小組發表與討論（working groups） 有別於一般研討會的論文發表，本次研討會著重於討論與意見交換，本人參加教 育脈絡（context）組的活動，組員約有十五分鐘的時間摘要發表論文的主要論述， 所有組員有義務事前閱讀彙集中的文章，以便立即參與討論，討論方向一方面提 出各篇文章的澄清與批判，另一方面更重視探索文化脈絡中各種影響數學教育的 面向。前四次小組時段（session），透過論文發表作引言，進行意見交換，最後 一次小組時段，依據先前小組討論的紀錄，重新澄清與凝聚共識，形成小組報告， 在大會與其他組成員分享。 小組成員共同認知到文化對數學教育實施有深遠的潛在影響，一方面質疑文化比 較的公平性（工具的缺乏），一方面認可文化比較研究促進對自我文化的反思， 在國際資訊能快速流通的今日，認知到文化的改變非常緩慢，文化交流是長期逐 步吸收融化（assimilation）的歷程，教育改革的成功有賴政治、社會的氛圍，也 會受到文化限制（cultural constraints）的修正。
