Chiang, C & Chung, J. (2002) Confrontations in the course of mathematics curriculum change. Pre-conference Proceedings ICMI Comparative Study Conference. Hong Kong: The University of Hong Kong. P. 249-254ABSTRACT. In 1993, Taiwan's Ministry of Education set new standards for
mathematics curriculum in elementary schools. This article examines the acceptance, resistance, and criticism of the experimental curriculum developed to meet those standards to reveal their socio-cultural meanings. The major controversies were over the delay in introduction of algorithms and the change of teaching method. These controversies reflect problems with miscommunication and deficiency in teaching skills as well as the influence of culturally rooted adult-child relations on mathematics education.
