EXTERNAL MERCHANDISE TRADE STATISTICS

OCTOBER/2009 No. 10

The value of total exports of goods amounted to MOP583 million in October 2009, down by 49.8%

year-on-year, with the value of domestic exports falling by 71.8% to MOP181 million and that of re- exports dropping by 22.6% to MOP402 million. The value of total imports of goods amounted to MOP3.17 billion, down by 11.6% year-on-year. A trade deficit of MOP2.59 billion was recorded for October 2009.

From January to October 2009, total value of merchandise exports fell by 54.7% year-on-year to MOP6.36 billion, with the value of domestic exports and re-exports declining by 69.7% and 31.7%

respectively; meanwhile, total value of merchandise imports slid by 18.5% to MOP29.62 billion over the same period of 2008.

The trade deficit for the first ten months of 2009 widened by 4.2% year-on-year to MOP23.26 billion;

the exports/imports ratio went down by 17.1 percentage points to 21.5%.

The value of Textile & garment exports shrank by 73.1% year-on-year to account for 34.6% of the total exports in the first ten months of 2009; meanwhile, the value of Non-textile exports decreased by 29.1%, with that of Machines & apparatus, parts & accessories thereof dropping by 53.7%, but value of Jewellery exports rising by 7.7%.

Analyzed by destination of merchandise exports, value of exports to Hong Kong declined by 8.5%

year-on-year and that to the USA, the EU and Mainland China dropped notably by 79.6%, 59.5% and 45.4%

respectively.

In the first ten months of 2009, total value of merchandise imports decreased by 18.5% year-on-year.

The value of imports by Broad Economic Category registered year-on-year decrease, of which Raw materials

& semi-manufactures declined by 40.4%, Fuels & lubricants fell by 25.3% and Consumer goods recorded a mild decrease of 5.2%.

Among the imports of Consumer goods, value of Passenger motor cars & motorcycles fell by 32.4%

year-on-year, and Other semi-durable consumer goods (clothing and footwear) also dropped by 30.4%;

however, value of imports of Household consumption goods registered a 17.4% increase.

Imports of all principal categories of Raw materials & semi-manufactures registered decreases, with value of construction materials and textile materials falling by 68.5% and 58.5% respectively year-on-year.

In the first ten months of 2009, value of merchandise imports from Mainland China and Hong Kong dropped by 37.1% and 10.7% respectively year-on-year, but that from the EU and the USA rose by 5.1% and 0.8% respectively.
