EXTERNAL MERCHANDISE TRADE STATISTICS
JANUARY/2009 No. 1
The value of total merchandise imports and exports continued to decline. The value of total exports of goods amounted to MOP774 million in January 2009, down significantly by 56.1% year-on-year, with the value of domestic exports decreasing by 65.6% to MOP436 million and that of re-exports dropping by 31.7% to MOP338 million. The value of total imports of goods amounted to MOP2.86 billion, down by 23.5% year-on-year.
The trade deficit for January 2009 was MOP2.08 billion and the exports/imports ratio decreased from 47.3% in January 2008 to 27.1%.

As regards exports of principal commodity, the value of Textile & garment exports reduced by 67.4%
year-on-year to account for 50.1% of the total exports in January 2009; meanwhile, the value of Non-textile exports decreased by 32.8%, with exports of Machines & apparatus, parts & accessories thereof falling by 60.8%, but exports of Jewellery rising by 9.4%.

Among the major destinations of Macao’s merchandise exports, the USA and the EU together absorbed 43.6% of the total exports of goods in January 2009. The value of exports to the USA and the EU declined notably by 70.7% and 68.8% year-on-year respectively, to account for 31.4% and 12.2% of the total exports.
As regards the Asian region, the value of exports to Mainland China and Hong Kong decreased by 45.3% and 15.9% respectively.

In January 2009, the value of total imports of goods dropped by 23.5% year-on-year. In terms of broad economic categories, the value of imports of all categories registered year-on-year decreases, of which Raw materials & semi-manufactures dropped by 45.1%, Capital goods fell by 27.0% and Consumer goods slid by 15.5%.

In the total imports of Consumer goods, the value of imports of Household consumption reduced by 6.4% year-on-year to account for 27.8%, and the value of imports of Other consumer goods (67.6% of the total) registered a year-on-year decrease of 15.5%. Among Other consumer goods, the value of imports of semi-durable consumer goods (e.g. clothing and footwear), durable consumer goods (e.g. jewellery and watches) and non-durable consumer goods (e.g. tobacco and skin-care products) fell by 30.9%, 11.4% and 1.7% respectively.

Within the imports of Raw materials & semi-manufactures, the value of construction materials (18.7% of the total) fell by 68.0% year-on-year and that of textile materials (13.0% of the total) decreased by 67.9%.

The value of imports from Mainland China and Hong Kong together absorbed 39.6% of the total imports in January 2009. Compared with January 2008, the value of imports from Mainland China and Hong Kong dropped by 44.5% and 17.4% respectively, but that from the EU and the USA grew by 1.5% and 31.7%
respectively.
