第四節 繁體班：西蒙 (一) 語言學習背景
西蒙學習過的外語有英語、法語、和西班牙語。接下來就西蒙對這三門語 言的學習態度及其學習情形來一一分享:
1. 學習第二外語很有趣
西蒙從國小開始學習英語，從中學開始學習法語，這兩門語言都是學校必 修課程；然而在高中畢業後，西蒙隨著家人搬到西班牙兩年左右，在這兩年期 間，西蒙因而學習了第三門語言:
我之所以學習英語，因為它是學校必修課程，而法語也是另一堂必修課 程。至於西班牙文，是因為我在高中畢業後，曾住在西班牙兩年。我只 是…真的對於語言非常感興趣，語言非常的有趣。這可能主要讓我想要去 學習語言的原因。(西蒙 140303)
I learned English because it’s school mandatory course, and French is another mandatory course. And I learned Spanish because I had lived in Spain for two years when I done with my high school studies. I just…really interested in lan-guages and it’s really fun. That’s probably the main reason I guess.
西蒙一開始會接觸第二外語雖然是因為學校有必修語言課程，所以學習英 語和法語，但有了實際的學習經驗後，認為語言是相當有趣的。西蒙覺得學習 語言最有趣的部分，就是能夠跟他人溝通交流:
(學習語言)就像拼圖，你懂吧!你把字組在一起，成為句子，然後跟其他人 溝通。一開始，你必須找到方法去達到目標，讓人們能夠理解你，這實在 非常有趣。(西蒙 140303)
(Learning language) It’s like a puzzle, you know. You put words together and form a sentence, and then communicate with other people, it’s…in the beginning, you have to find a way to reach the goal, to make yourself understood, and this is very interesting.

西蒙認為學習外語而能夠與他人交流是非常有趣的。更有趣的是，即便是 同一個人，會因為說著不同的外語或對外語的掌握程度，而給人不同的感受，
在交流溝通方面產生不同的效果:
我們的法國主廚不喜歡講英語。但因為我們一些同事不會說法語，他必須 跟他們說英語。有一個主廚助手，強尼，他因為和我們法國主廚有些爭執 而辭了工作。強尼抱怨我們主廚是一個傲慢、粗魯、不禮貌的工作夥伴。
嗯，我可以理解強尼對主廚的感受，而這都是溝通的問題。當我們主廚教 導我做某些事情時，他總會跟我解釋每一個細節。因為我懂得法文，我們 能夠瞭解彼此。但當主廚必須說英語時，他無法說得清楚，在講英語時他 總是失去耐心……即便他會說英語，他的英語說的並不好，所以他不喜歡 說英語。他無法用英語與他人進行真正的溝通，因為他對於這個語言並不 熟悉，他並不知道如何用英語表達出自己。他只知道如何說英語，而非如 何用英語與他人溝通，這很可惜。 (西蒙 140429)
Our French Chef doesn’t like to speak English. But because some of our co-workers can’t speak French, he has to speak English to them. One of the chef as-sistant, Johnny, he quit his job because he had some quarrels with our French chef. John complains about our chef as an arrogant, rude, impolite people to work with. Well, I can understand what Johnny feels about our chef, and that’s all about the communicating problem. When our chef taught me doing some-thing, he always explained everything in detail to me. Since I can speak French, we have no problem understanding each other. But when he has to explain some-thing in English, he couldn’t make himself clear, he always lost his patience while speaking English……Even he can speak English, he can’t speak English well, so he doesn’t like to speak in English. He can’t have a real conversation with others in English because he is not family with this language and he doesn’t know how to express himself with English. It’s a pity that he only knows how to speak in English but not how to communicate with others in English.
西蒙認為與外國人交流時，若能以對方的母語進行對話，便可以拉近彼此 距離。再者，學習了外語，善加應用是最重要的，若無法以外語順利表達自 己，就不能算是學會該門外語。因此，外語能力的優劣並不在於即能否取得語 言能力證書，而是能否好好使用該門語言:

我曾經訪問過某貿易公司的人力資源主管，我們討論了很多關於如何做出 完美履歷表的方法。他說語言技能相當重要，而在履歷表中呈現自己外語 技能的方式是描述自己如何使用該門語言。所以不只是提供一張語言能力 證書，而是要詳盡描述你如何使用該門語言。(西蒙 140429)
I’ve interviewed the manager of human resource department of a trade company, and we talked a lot about how to make a perfect resume. He said that, language skill is quite important in job surfing and the best way to include foreign lan-guage skills on your resume is to illustrate how you use this lanlan-guage. So it’s not the matter of offering a piece of language proficiency certificate but to describe how you use the language in detail.
學習外語是有趣的，然而西蒙認為是否要學習某一門外語，取決於該語言 的實用性。像是英語，就是實用性很高的語言。例如在網際網路與他國網友溝 通，最普及的語言就是英語，所以西蒙認為學英語非常實用:
我們在遊戲中，可以點擊對話窗跟隊友交談，像是討論在新任務中要去 哪、作些什麼。在我們的團隊聊天室中，有大概五十多名成員，分別來自 不同國家，像是日本、臺灣、韓國、義大利、德國、美國。然而在聊天室 中，大家都用英語。就連我和瑞典友人說話，為了能讓隊裡所有人能看 懂，也得用英語。(西蒙 140429)
While we were in the game, we can click on the chat window to discuss with our team members, such as where to go and what to do for the new mission. There are about fifty people in our team chat room, and they are from many different countries around world, like Japan, Taiwan and Korea, Italy, German, and America. And all we can see in the chat room is English. Even when I need to say something to my friends, Swedes, of course, I have to speak English, just for everyone to understand us.
當我想在網路上買些東西或搜尋些東西時，我通常使用英語，而非瑞典 文，因為這樣會更容易且更快得到我要的。(西蒙 140429)
I usually use English other than Swedish when I want to buy something or search something on the internet, because it would be much easier and faster to get what I want!

西蒙認為在網路的平臺上，英語是最為普及的語言，為各國人士廣為使 用，比起自己的母語更便於交流。除了網際網路的世界，在真實世界裡能使英 語機會也不少。像西蒙所處的瑞典，有著相當多國際人士與外來移民的，瑞典 人能使用英語的機會相當多:
我有很多外國朋友都抱怨在瑞典學習瑞典文並不容易，他們沒有機會跟瑞 典人說瑞典文的機會。因為大部分瑞典人的英語都不錯，只要他們發現你 是外國人，就會跟你說英語。(西蒙 140429)
A lot of my foreign friends complained that learning Swedish in Sweden is not easy at all, they don’t get the chance to speak Swedish to Swedes. Since most Swedes speak pretty good English, they will speak English to you if they notice you’re a foreigner.
像我工作的餐廳，我們經理和主廚是法國人，櫃檯人員是泰國人，送菜人 員是美國人。我們主要是以英語和法語溝通。(西蒙 140429)
Like the restaurant I worked at, our manager and head chef are French, the cashier is from Thailand and the food runners are from America and India. We mainly speak English and French.
西蒙認為英語是相當實用且普及的外語，然而法語也是為人所廣泛使用的 另一門外語。西蒙覺得法語相當實用，便在學校第一年的必修課程結束後又繼 續選修法語:
我們父母也非常鼓勵我們學習法語，因為法語就像英語也是相當強勢的語 言。例如，世界上有超過二億五千萬的人口使用法語，而且法語也是網路 上第二個普遍使用的語言。當我和隊友在網路上進行討論時，法文和英文 一樣好用。事實上，我覺得只要你學過英語，法語並不難學，畢竟有 45%
的英語字都是源自法語。(西蒙 140429)
Our parents also encourage us to learn French, since French is also a pretty big language like English. Like, there are more than 250 million people speaking French all over the world and it’s the second most used language on the Inter-net. When I had a discussion with my team members on the Internet, French worked as good as English in our talk as well. Actually, I think it won’t be

cult to learn it if you’ve already learned English. Since there are 45% of all Eng-lish words have a French origin.
西蒙學習外語的原因取決於該門外語的實用性與普及性，對於學習英語與 法語也抱持著很正面積極的態度。至於西班牙語，則是因為家庭因素而搬到西 班牙的兩年，到了西班牙後，深刻的感受到當地人的熱情友善，卻礙於語言隔 閡無法與大家溝通交流，因而決心學習西班牙語:
當地人都相當友善且熱心助人，像我們的鄰居，幾乎每個禮拜都邀請我們 參加派對，也會在暴風來臨前夕提醒我們做好防災準備。他們真的很棒，
我非常喜歡他們，想和他們成為更好的朋友，但是他們的英文不好，我的 西班牙文也不行! (西蒙 140429)
People there were really nice and very helpful, like our neighbors, they invited us to their party almost every week, and reminded us to be prepared for the up-coming storm. They were so great! I really liked them and wanted to be their friends. But they can barely speak English, I can’t speak Spanish!
(社區)有些人會試著跟我聊天，但對話總是在三分鐘內結束。事實上，你 永遠無法跟一個隻會說”你好”和”謝謝”的人有一段真正的對話。(西蒙 140429) Some of them even tried to chat with me, but the conversation always end up in three minutes. The thing is, you could never have a real talk with someone who can only say “Hola” or “Muchas gracias” to you.
西蒙相當重視人際溝通，對於學習第二外語的態度也十分正面開放。他認 為學習外語、以外語跟更多人交流溝通是相當有趣的；使用不同的語言、或對 語言的掌握程度，也會給人不同感受、影響與他人的交流。具備外語技能除了 可以與更多人溝通，更能為自己的履歷加分。然而，是否該學習一門外語的關 鍵在於語言的實用性與普及性。接下來就西蒙學習外語的方式一一分享。
2. 學好第二外語關鍵在於環境
西蒙第一次接觸的外語就是英語，老師上課的方式非常活潑多元，除了課 本教材的內容，更會補充很多日常生活常能使用的片語或句型，也設計很多課 後演練活動，西蒙認為英語學習是相當有趣的，因而願意花更多時間在英語學 習上:

其實我不覺得我是在「讀」英文。英文課總是有很多有趣的活動和挑戰，
我非常享受。我的英文課每週只有三小時，但我猜我每天至少花三小時學 習英文……我們學的比課本裡的內容還更多，因為我們老師總是給我們很 多日常生活常常使用的例子和額外的詞彙……有些活動，像是唱英語歌或 看卡通，像辛普森家庭。然而在這些活動後，我們會有一些小考或是練習
