Abstract:

Jade fans all know not easy to verify if jade item is a genuine piece! It is even harder to judge a jade piece being man-made or natural color. The purpose of man-made color on jade item is to make it look older so to sell better price in the market. A well man-made color on jade can beautify the item itself, or damage sometimes happen. In China, the man-made color on jade started from Song Dynasty until now.

There are two types of natural color. Firstly the jade stone, no matter from mountain or river, create its skin when being contacted by minerals nearby. Secondly a jade item would get some natural colors after being buried.

As early as Shang Dynasty, there was nice jade-skin piece being produced. The craftsmen started making good items with jade skin in Han Dynasty. Then in Liao, Qin, and Yuan Dynasties, more jade-skin items were produced, as they were peoples from North and all love things in nature. Some beautiful jade crafts named “ Autumn Mountain” very popular with its own style.

Affected by previous Dynasties, there were some nice jade-skin products in the market from time to time in Ming Dynasty. However jade-skin items reached its highest form of expression during 18 century under Qian Long Emperor. Qian Long Emperor selected right jade stone with good skin and instructed his craftsmen to produce some Archer’s Rings marked with his own poems.
