在簡單回顧了小國研究中三種類型的文獻以後，我們對於該領域的相關討 論、爭論焦點以及發展現狀都有了概括性的瞭解。由於本篇論文除了試圖發展理 論以外，更要利用「古美關係」、「斯印關係」及「兩岸關係」三組事例來作為理 論檢證的經驗基礎。因此，我們有必要檢視學者們對「古美關係」、「斯印關係」
及「兩岸關係」進行了哪些研究。

依據不同的討論面向，我們大致可以將研究古美關係的文獻分為四種類型，
它們分別從「決策者」、「國內政治」、「國際體系及互動」、「應然」四種分析的層 次出發，前面三種類型的文獻探討各層次的因素如何影響了古巴與美國的關係，
最後一種類型的文獻則試圖對古美關係如何緩解等議題開出藥方。雖然這四種研 究層次彼此並不相互衝突，事實上研究者還常常進行跨層次的結合，以對其所關 注的課題現象提供更完整的分析及解釋，不過為了討論的方便，我們還是把它們 分開對待。
將決策者設定為主要分析層次的作品基本認為，古巴及美國對待彼此的態度 都可以從該國領導人的價值系統獲得解答。因此，我們必須探究卡斯楚50以及歷任 與其交鋒的美國總統在個人特質、政治信仰以及決策風格上的傾向，如此才能有 效地掌握雙方的政策。51雖然這一類型的作品通常都蒐集了豐富的一手資料，然而
